What is Gimp software? It's GNU Image Manipulation Program. This project has been going on for about 18 years, since 1995, when Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis started it as a students at University of California, Berkeley.
It is alternative to Adobe Photoshop®, but it is open source and free. And what does that mean? Open source means that anybody can download the source code and improve it, and free means that we can download it for free.
I found GIMP few years ago and I have been using it regularly since then. There are so many things we can do with GIMP, not only complicated stuff with photo, but simple things too. A very interesting option is screen shot of our window or desktop image. There are many online screenshot programs, but they don't capture the whole screen, just the picture in the active window, that this usually the pages we are reading. And of course we can use it for "playing" with our pictures.
And what else can we do with it? There are few things we can do with it:
- change size of a picture (resize it)
- flip and rotate image
- crop photos (cut out only little pieces)
- change background
- change color of our picture
- remove red eyes
- or use different effects and filters to change our photos.

Photo Red Eye Remover Free
Today I'll tell you more about two photo red eye remover free programs - Gimp and Fast Stone.
You can use Fast Stone just for personal and educational projects, if you want to use it for commercial too, you have to pay license for it. And you can use Gimp for free for personal and commercial projects.
First we'll remove red eyes with Gimp. You just simply import a picture and outline red eye (pupil) with Selection Tool. You can find Selection Tool in Toolbox, where are other useful buttons too.
When your pupil is outlined, go to Filters - Enhance - Red Eye Removal. And that's it. Red eye becomes black. Repeat with the other eye and red eyes completely disappear.

Fall Photos
Wow.
I'm on Squidoo home page for the fourth time in a row. This time my
first page lens is Fall Photos, http://www.squidoo.com/fall-photos
.
I took few photos last
Autumn, and they looked a bit boring and grayish. So I made a few
tricks with Gimp and photos looked prettier at once. It is really
easy and it doesn't take much time.
Try it yourself.

Raster Graphic Definition
Raster graphic definition: it means that photos are made of many small points or pixels. Pixel is a single point in a raster image. Raster graphics images are also called bitmaps.
You can see that here in enlarged photos. They are about 1500 % larger than photo "Autumn tree" below. And you can try it yourself too, just zoom (enlarge) your photo to 1500% and you'll see a lot of unrecognizable little squares.
You can find more about raster graphic here.
Gimp is free raster graphics editor, similar to Adobe Photoshop®.

How to ... with open source and free software
About two years ago, when I wanted to create my website, I discovered Joomla and PrestaShop. And few month ago I discovered Gimp and Inkscape.
I learned quite a lot about Joomla and Prestashop in all this time and I'm still learning about Gimp and Inkscape.
At first they looked strange to me, but then I got used to it. I have found a lot of tutorials and forums, where user can get some help.
Since then I discovered quite a lot of free and open source software. Some of them are really good and easy to use and I like them. I really like making tutorials how to use them.
For now there are mostly tutorials for Joomla, PrestaShop, Gimp and Inkscape and later hopefully there will be tutorials for other software too.
